Frequently asked questions
What size is an Indian passport photo?
35 mm wide × 45 mm high (3.5 × 4.5 cm), according to the Passport Seva application form instruction booklet. The booklet describes paper applications; it says no photo is needed at a Passport Seva Kendra. Check the official page before you apply.
Which sizes can I choose?
India passport 35 × 45 mm, Canada passport 50 × 70 mm, UK passport 35 × 45 mm and Australia passport 35 × 45 mm (the printed size may be 35–40 × 45–50 mm). You can also type your own size. For visa photos see the Visa Photo Maker.
How do I make a photo under 50 KB?
In step 2, pick the 50 KB limit. We lower the JPG quality until the file fits. If the limit is very small, you can allow fewer pixels, but only if your portal does not need exact pixels.
Which file format does the photo have?
JPG or PNG, and JPG is the default, because portals ask for JPG. A PDF is only for the print sheet (4 × 6 in, A4 or Letter, at 300 DPI), which is handy for photo shops.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The photo is processed in your browser and never leaves your device. The same is true when you remove the background.
Can I remove the background?
Yes, with the Remove background button under the photo. It works in your browser, only when you click it, and then you can choose white, off-white or your own colour. Fine hair can look rough, so check the edges before you download. Many forms ask for a plain white or light background; check the official page for yours.
What does Remove background download?
The first time, your browser downloads a small cut-out program and a model from this site, about 17 MB in total. Your photo is not sent anywhere: it stays on your device. Your browser keeps the files, so the next time nothing is downloaded.
Which open-source software does it use?
The cut-out model MODNet (Apache License 2.0), in the ONNX version published by Xenova on Hugging Face (Apache License 2.0), and ONNX Runtime Web by Microsoft (MIT License). They are served from this site, not from another server.
Do you check my photo against the rules?
No. We show the sizes and, where the official page gives one, the head size. Background, expression, glasses and similar rules are up to you, and we cannot promise that a photo will be accepted.
Can I print the photos at home?
For a paper application for an Indian passport, the Passport Seva booklet says a photo in computer print will not be accepted. Australian passport photos must be dye-sublimation prints (not inkjet) on heavy glossy paper, at least 200 gsm. For other uses, check the rules of the office that asks.
Why does my photo look blurry?
A small photo is enlarged to fill the size you chose. Use a larger photo, taken in good light.
Is this tool part of a government service?
No. This tool is not affiliated with any government. Check the official page before you apply.
Can I take the photo with my camera?
Yes. Choose Use camera. Your browser asks for permission first, and the picture stays on your device. The live view shows the frame of the chosen size and the dashed oval, and the camera is asked for HD quality (up to 1920 × 1080) if your device supports it. Click Take picture, and use Retake photo if you want another one. Even light and a plain background help, but the tool does not check the photo against any rules.
Can I straighten, zoom or brighten my photo?
Yes. You can rotate by 90°, flip, tilt from −15° to +15°, zoom from 100 % to 250 %, drag the photo, and drag the corners of the frame to crop. Under Adjust photo, Brightness, Contrast and Saturation go from 50 % to 150 %. After Remove background they change only the person, so the background colour stays exactly as you chose it. Reset puts zoom, turn, tilt, flip and position back; Reset adjustments puts the three sliders back.
Can I use my own size, for example in pixels?
Yes. Choose Custom size, pick px, mm, cm or inch, and type the width and the height. The pixel size is always shown, and each side can be up to 10,000 px. No rules are checked for a custom size, so use the size, background and file size your form asks for.
