Frequently asked questions

Which visa photo sizes can I choose?

USA: digital, a square image of 600 to 1200 px, JPEG, up to 240 KB, sRGB; or printed 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm). UK: digital, at least 600 × 750 px, JPG, 50 KB to 6 MB. Canada: at least 35 × 45 mm. Schengen: 35 × 45 mm. Japan: 45 × 45 mm. Singapore: a 400 × 514 px upload. China: 33 × 48 mm. You can also type your own size.

What are the USA visa photo rules?

For the digital image, the US Department of State asks for a square image of 600 to 1200 px per side, JPEG, sRGB, 240 KB or less. A printed photo is 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm). Check the official page before you apply.

What are the UK visa photo rules?

For a digital photo, GOV.UK asks for at least 600 × 750 px, a JPG of 50 KB to 6 MB, and a plain light background. The photo must not be altered by computer software.

What are the Canada visa photo rules?

Canada.ca asks for a photo of at least 35 × 45 mm, with the face from chin to crown 31 to 36 mm, a white or light background, and two identical photos from the last six months. Digital photos must not be altered in any way.

What are the Schengen visa photo rules?

The page of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs (one Schengen state) asks for 35 × 45 mm, with the distance from eyes to chin at least 13 mm. Each Schengen country and consulate can add its own rules, so check yours.

What about Japan, Singapore and China?

Japan: 45 × 45 mm, white background only, taken within the last six months (Embassy of Japan in India). Singapore: an upload of 400 × 514 px, up to 8 MB, as JPG, JPEG, HEIC, HEIF or PNG; this is the ICA e-Services photo page, which is not only for visas. China: 33 × 48 mm (visa application notice).

How do I make a visa photo under 240 KB?

In step 2, pick the limit your portal asks for, for example 240 KB (the USA digital photo starts there), or type your own number. We lower the JPG quality until the file fits. If the limit is very small, you can allow fewer pixels, but only if your portal does not need exact pixels.

Can I use Remove background for a visa photo?

Yes, with the Remove background button under the photo. It works in your browser, only when you click it. But GOV.UK says a UK visa photo must not be altered by computer software, and Canada.ca says digital photos must not be altered in any way. If your photo already has a plain light background, leave Remove background off for those two.

Should I check the rules of my consulate?

Yes. Each country and consulate can have its own rules, and rules can change. We show the sizes and, where the official page gives one, the head size, but we do not check your photo and cannot promise that a photo will be accepted.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The photo is processed in your browser and never leaves your device. The same is true when you remove the background.

Is this tool part of a government service?

No. This tool is not affiliated with any government. Check the official page before you apply.
